A night of good play at the club – Thur. March 29th, 2007 March 31, 2007
Posted by Hans in Club Results.2 comments
Another night at the club. I played relaxed and tried my best. Hopefully this newfound attitude along with the studying that I’ve been doing will help me in the upcoming tournament this weekend (Cambridge, Ontario).
Game #1 vs. Allan B (view full game)
Not much to say about this game. I made a good find of THORNIER using an existing E on the board. Allan came back with ANIMIST that I challenged incorrectly. I didn’t know TEETHES had an anagram (ESTHETE) and I completely missed DETOXES and mANSION. Gotta study some more of the high-probability bingoes.
FINAL SCORE: 363 – 320 (WIN)
Game #2 vs. Ann H (view full game)
I had some good tiles this game and used them to my advantage. One interesting play – I played HORDED/QAID and Ann immediately challenged me. She made me wonder if I spelled HORDED incorrectly. Later, I made a stupid ENACTERS which was challenged off. Luckily for me, on my next turn, I noticed the free B on A1 and I played BRACKETS (I had ACERT?? on my rack – 154 possible 7 letter bingos). I made solid plays and closed the game out. Apparently, I missed RESHOED on my opening play – didn’t know that was a word.
FINAL SCORE: 455 -244 (WIN)
Game #3 vs. Percy F (view full game)
I continued my string of good play. I had some decent tiles and again made good use of them to build a lead on each and every turn. I only had one bingo opportunity and I played PHASING (G was a blank). I was hoping to make more use of the J, but I only was able to play RIoJA for 41 points. Having studied the J4–6 (still working on the J7–8), I’m not worried about getting the J now.
FINAL SCORE: 394 – 251 (WIN)
**********
One thing I noticed early in the evening was that I was starting to see words and possible words that could be formed with my tiles. The weird thing was that I was seeing a number of 8 letter words. For example, I mentioned that in game #1, I missed DETOXES. What I actually saw was DEXTROSE and was hoping for Allan to give me access to an R – never happened, but I was encouraged that I was starting to see possible words. In game #2, I remember seeing CRAFTILY, playing through an I that I had left on a previous play. Again, I wasn’t able to play because Ann unknowingly blocked my spot. Hopefully I’ll be able to continue to see the plays during the tournament in Cambridge on Saturday. The tournament is 7 games and I’m currently ranked 6th of 16 players in division 5. I hope that I have a strong performance.
Sometimes it’s better to be lucky than good… (Thurs. March 22, 2007) March 22, 2007

I’ve been on a pretty bad losing streak the past few weeks (seven games I believe) and I wasn’t feeling that great about playing at the club. But I kept reminding myself that these games are all for practice, for preparation, and for testing so that I can play well during tournaments. Still, winning is much more fun than losing
Here are the results from last night’s club.
Game #1 vs. Dave K (view full game)
I started off well with a bingo on my second turn (HEADINg) but went downhill from there. I had some beautiful racks of: IIIINNT, AIIINOU, AIIIMOO, EPSSUUW, CIIOSTU and ASSUUUV. I only had one bingo opportunity and used it up. I didn’t know I had a 7 letter bingo SARODES – didn’t matter because I had no place to play it. I also had STOOLIE (I also thought OOLITES) but again, no place to put it. I tried GOOLIEST but that got challenged off. For some strange reason, Dave made two consecutive spelling mistakes to start the game (DI and GA). I wasn’t sure if he was setting me up to get some bingo lanes. Maybe I could have traded more frequently (I exchanged tiles two times). This game was probably just one of those games.
FINAL SCORE: 356 – 323 (LOSS)
Game #2 vs. John D (view full game)
This game was interesting because I finally had some decent tiles and I made good use of them. But the story of this game was me missing John’s phony plays. I challenged GOALED early in the game and got a bit gun-shy afterward. In total, I missed five phony plays. FIVE! Here are the five words I missed:
- CERA – I thought the spelling was SERA but figured that this was an alternative spelling
- DOU – I thought he mis-spelled this word, but I’ve been struggling with my 3 letter words so I let this one go. Guess it’s time to brush up on the 3’s. Just plain stupid of me.
- CREY – Here’s another one that I thought about but decided not to challenge. I really don’t know what I was thinking. At the time, I thought this could be one of the many four letter words that I still don’t know.
- GAUNTEd/T(WAD) – This play hurt because he played two phonys on me! The only reason I let this one go is because I had a bingo on my rack (INTEGER) with only one place to play it and I didn’t want to lose this challenge and then have him take my spot. So I figured I’d let him take this bingo and I would play my higher-scoring bingo. His bingo only put him up by 10 points so I figured I’ll just take my bingo and create a big lead (65 points).
I missed a few bingos: BEIGNET (didn’t know this word) and INEPTLY/YELPING. Luckily after missing YELPING, I was able to play PUNISHED to stick it to John. After my play, he said that I really stuck it to him. Heh heh. Unfortunately, after the game he was harping about how I got all the good tiles. Sure I got some good tiles, but a) I still had to use them and b) where were those good tiles the past few weeks during my losing streak? I’m realizing more and more that you can’t control the tiles. I just need to play the best I can with the tiles I get. Sometimes you get crap – deal with it.
FINAL SCORE: 427 – 352 (WIN – finally!)
Game #3 vs. Yvonne L (view full game)
When I saw that I was matched against Yvonne, I wasn’t too confident. Yvonne is a 1550+ rated player at our club and I’m still in the low 1100s. I figured that I was in for a drubbing. Actually, I overheard Yvonne ask Craig why we were matched and he said that it should be a good match. I don’t know what you’re smoking Craig, but thanks for the vote of confidence.
Anyway, I started off with CLNNWY? and was wondering if I was going to get blown out. I traded everything except for the N? and picked up another blank. Quackle pointed out PAVONINE as the only bingo but there’s no way I was going to find that (I didn’t even know that was a word). On my next turn, I had INNRV?? and I couldn’t see anything. There was a free O at 15H and I tried to get a bingo but couldn’t see anything. In that rack, I missed NIRVANA, INNERVE, NERVINE, NERVING, ENVIRON, and VINTNER – I’m not sure if I’d find any of those because of the ??. I also missed a number of 8s. I played off VN and played BINDERS on my next turn for only 67 points. I was a bit disappointed that I scored so little, but I figured that Yvonne couldn’t use the blanks to score.
A few turns later, I was able to play ZOOMS for 72 points to make the score 191 – 163 for me. From her body language (and a trade), I figured that she wasn’t getting the best tiles. The board was somewhat closed and so I decided to play a conservative game and let her open up the board. Looking back, maybe ZOOMS was the beginning of the end as Yvonne seemed a bit jittery – maybe it’s because I was actually winning that was putting some pressure on her. In any case, she tried to create a bingo lane by playing ZIG at J2. I got a bit worried about that hanging G and I had BEINSTT (basically BITTEN + S). The score was 227 – 189 for me and I played BETTINGS because it sounded good (it’s not). She didn’t even think twice and said “nice play”. I had a bunch of vowels and so I played them off while trying to close off the board as best as I could (or at the very least, make it very difficult for here to bingo). I took the TWS and made her try and open the board. After playing EVE at A6, I played REFLATE (88 points). I wasn’t sure if this was good, but I figured that I really had nothing to lose as I was winning 356 – 290. My thinking was that if the word isn’t good, there are still a few tiles left in the bag so she can’t bingo and finish the game. Besides, I had most of the good tiles and I figured that I could play them to score and at least make the game close. She challenged the word but it stayed on. I picked-up ACI to finish the bag and I knew she had TAILERS (for some reason I completely forgot about the SATIRE stem) which she could play several ways (RETAILS, SALTIER). I figured that I should just play as many tiles as I could, thinking that she couldn’t bingo and finish. Wrong. She played REALIST for 84 to finish. Luckily for me I had a big lead.
FINAL SCORE: 451 – 376 (WIN – I’m still shocked that I won)
Honestly, I got very lucky in this game and had almost all of the good tiles. I’m sure that if we played 100 games, I’d lose 99 of them to Yvonne right now. The Scrabble rating calculator indicates that statistically, I’m expected to win 0.061 games against her (that’s what 6%?). I know I got lucky. Looking back, the factors of Yvonne challenging the wrong bingo (REFLATE instead of BETTINGS), me getting some good tiles, and me keeping the board relatively closed gave me this lucky win. Hey, a win is a win. Hopefully my luck and improved play will continue at the upcoming tournament.
Learning from your mistakes – Club night March 15, 2007 March 16, 2007

I was looking forward to another night at the club so that I could try out some of the words I’ve been studying. I’m currently going through the J words and have finished the 3, 4, 5, and 6 letter words with J. I’m hoping to polish off the 7 and 8 letter words this week.
Game #1 vs. Kevin T (view full game)
This was an interesting game. Reviewing the game on Quackle, I missed two bingo opportunities: ETERNITY and BROMELIN/MISENROL – both opportunities were 8s. I don’t think I would have found the second one, but maybe had a chance at ETERNITY. Basically, I made one strategic and sub-optimal play early in the game, and Kevin played off of it for his bingo (FATTENS 89 points) which is basically the difference in the game.
FINAL SCORE: 360 – 291 (LOSS)
Game #2 vs. Priya F (view full game)
I was trying to figure out why/how I was matched with Priya for game #2. She’s in the “A” division (1500+) and I’m … not. I figured “I have nothing to lose” and decided to play as best as I could. On my second turn, I had ILLORS? and didn’t see anything. BRILLOS is the only bingo there (I would never have thought of that word). On turn #2, Priya played ACTIONS at J2 but then switched to 11C. I had ILMPRS? and was thinking SIMPLER. I saw LIMPERS but wasn’t sure if that was a word (“one who limps” – just doesn’t really sound right). I played off a few tiles and then a few turns later, I played SeXTANTs, burning two blanks for 76 points – again, I missed a better play (same word, but for 102 points) just a few spaces over. I played so-so the rest of the match, but then got stuck with a bunch of Es the rest of the game. Turns 10 to 14, I had 4 Es on my rack – I would play off a couple, but get them back some how. In the end, Priya’s solid play, her superior word knowledge, and a touch of bad luck for me led to my loss (no big surprise).
FINAL SCORE: 419 – 294 (LOSS).
Game #3 vs. Valeria K (view full game)
Not sure what to say about this one. I’ve lost my last couple of games to Valeria, and for some reason, I just don’t play well against her (lately). She keeps announcing the score and it sort of bothers me. Maybe that plus the fact that she seems to be getting the better tiles (lately) has put me in a bad frame of mind. I think this is something I need to work on – maintaining a positive attitude.
Anyway, I battled the tiles this game. On one sequence, I had BGGHPSU and played off UG (in retrospect, maybe I should have exchanged some tiles). As luck would have it, I picked up UG. I made one bingo (E)MPOwERS for 87 points on turn #10. Quackle pointed out that I could have played REiMPOS(E) for 92 points as one better play. That was pretty much it for me as this game was a series of sub-optimal plays.
FINAL SCORE: 405 – 341 (LOSS)
**********
In addition to my word knowledge, I think I’m going to make a conscious effort to improve the mental aspect of my game. My strategy is improving as my word knowledge improves, so I’m going to focus on staying positive and not “giving up” on any one rack. Craig (our club director) tells us to “always look for a better play” even if you’ve found a bingo. I think I’m going to try and put that advice into practice the next few weeks before the Cambridge Scrabble tournament (March 31, 2007).
Inside the numbers…. March 11, 2007
Posted by Hans in Analysis, Statistics.1 comment so far
Here are some statistics from the book Word Freak when someone analyzed a series of games and observed the following:
- Winners outscored losers by 75 points
- The winner drew 4.3 more tiles than the loser
- The winner went first more often
- The winner played more of the “power tiles” (i.e., the 11 tiles that are worth 4 points or more)
- The winner outbingoed the loser 2:1, accounting for ~90% of the differential in points
- 2–4 letter words comprise 5% of the dictionary, yet account for 75% of the words formed, and ~50% of the score
- Bingos formed 6% of the words played, but accounted for ~28% of the score
- For every bingo played, 12.5 short words were played
Luck is considered 15–30% of the game. “You can’t control the tiles” (Joe Edley).
One of the expert players at my club mentioned that you need to try and average about 30 points per turn to give yourself a chance to win. He figured that there are somewhere between 13–15 turns per game (at the higher levels, I notice that players take fewer turns than at the “lower” levels), allowing you to score at least 400 points.
When I examine my own play at the most recent Oshawa tournament (view recap), here are the statistics:
- Over the 12 games I played, the average scores for me and my opponent were 373.08 and 348.67 points per game (about +24.42 points per game difference). I averaged over one bingo a game (1.17) compared with 0.42 bingos per game by my opponent;
- In my 8 wins, I scored 393.75 points per game compared to 332.88 for my opponents (+60.88 points/game differential). I averaged 1.38 bingos compared with 0.38 for my opponents. Basically, when I won, I made one more bingo each game than my opponents.
- In my 4 losses, I averaged 331.75 points/game compared with 380.25 for my opponents (a difference of -48.50 points/game). In these losses, I only averaged 0.75 bingos/game compared with 0.50 for my opponents (a difference of only +0.25 bingos/game)
- In my wins, I scored 62 points more per game than during my losses (393.75 vs. 331.75), while my opponents scored 47.38 points per game fewer (332.88 vs. 380.25) compared to when I lost. Basically, when I lost, I played worse and my opponents played much better compared to my wins.
- During my wins, I averaged 25.0 points per turn, compared with 21.75 points per turn in my losses.
I was too lazy to analyze the averages for the power tiles, but I can remember that in two of my losses, I had junk tiles. Based on the statistics, I think that some of the statistics reported in Word Freak, seem to hold true. In my wins, I did outbingo my opponents and scored about 61 points more (basically a low-scoring bingo). Unfortunately, I only scored about 25 points per turn for my wins and a measly 21.75 points per turn in my losses.
This analysis seems to provide me further evidence that I need to improve my knowledge of <7 letter words. I think that is the area where I can increase my score significantly. I think if I raise my overall scoring ability, I will have greater chances of winning on a consistent basis.
I think I’m going to start doing some statistical analysis of my games to see if any trends develop. If there are any other statistics that I should be examining, I’d love to learn what they are. I wonder if point differential/spread has any role.
Recipe to become a Champion (from Word Freak) March 11, 2007
Posted by Hans in Analysis, Tips & Advice.1 comment so far
Here’s some advice that I jotted down a while back when I was reading Stefan Fatsis’s book, Word Freak. I can’t remember the name of the (champion) player who shared this advice with Stefan.
Recipe To Become a Champion
- The ability to desire to be the best, or desire to WIN whatever championship is important to you.
- Unshakable honesty within oneself to answer the questions about your own strengths and weaknesses
- Control your breath
- Finding a way to control your emotional states
- The X-factor: The seemingly extraordinary state that any given champion has during the winning tournament
The player also indicated:
- To win, you need the ability to win. You have to develop your mind to the point at which seeing the plays and considering the best options over the board become possible.
- You also need an equal or superior word knowledge as your opponent. There is no need to close the board.
- Don’t go over words you’re never going to miss. Only look at combinations that are words you want to know.

I was looking forward to playing at the club because of my recent tournament result (3rd place in my division) and because I had been studying the past few days/weeks. Basically, I’m approaching club games as practice opportunities and to test out whether my studying has paid off.
Game #1 vs. Gene T (view full game)
I had a tough game battling the tiles. I opened with BDFPQTT – should have traded but played Q(A)T instead. I got stuck with a bunch of consonents the next turn and was forced to trade. Here are my bingo racks:
- ELNTTW? – TOWNLET (I definitely didn’t see this one)
- AEHLNT? – I thought there was a bingo (or two) here but couldn’t see it. BENTHAL, LETHEAN, ANETHOL, ETHANOL, ENTHRAL, & HANTLES are the options.
- ELNNST? – I saw TUNNELS but didn’t know about LINNETS
Gene played MONGERS for 91 points and I challenged the play. After I challenged the play, I thought about “war-mongers” and thought “oh crap”. Combined with the stupid opening move (not training), I wasn’t really thinking this game. Gene then played LARDASs on me. I held and thought about it, but eventually let it go. The worst part was that on the very next turn, I was still thinking about that word and realized that it wasn’t good.
I had one more “theoretical” bingo opportunity that Quackle pointed out: PANNIE(RE)D.
The lesson to learn from this game is to learn to “move-on” after a play is over and to not allow previous plays (or games) affect how you play.
FINAL SCORE: 528 – 253 (LOSS)
Game #2 vs. John D (view full game)
This game against John D was interesting as I started off with some good tiles but ended with some very poor tiles at the end. I had to make some very interesting strategic plays to try and make the game close. I missed one bingo opportunity: EHRSUU? for HUMERUS. Luckily I was able to play STUR(D)IES on the very next play – it even drew a challenge.
At one point, I had ACDGIIN on my rack and I wanted to play one of the new words that I was trying to learn. I remembered NICAD but didn’t want to open up column O with a free shot at a triple-triple so I played CNADI. The good news is that the play wasn’t challenged (CANID or CNIDA are the annograms). The bad news is that if I played CANID, I would have had 8 more points on the play (significantly affecting the outcome of the game – see below).
John got some great tiles at the end, but couldn’t take much advantage. He played QATS (69), JISM (13), XI (22), EH (24), and . Basically, the QATS play really hurt as he was able to take a lead about midway. I got stuck with a bunch of Is the rest of the game. On turn #13, I had ACEIIIT and realized that the X was still “out there”. Thinking defensively, I played LEI at B8 for 11 points. John said that he picked up the X just as I played and wanted to play there to take advantage of the TLS (probably for 52 points). This game came down to the wire. At a tournament, I would have asked for a recount, but since we were at the club, I didn’t bother.
FINAL SCORE: 380 – 377 (LOSS) – Quackle shows the score as 383 – 382 (but still a loss).
Game #3 vs. Valeria K
I didn’t bother reviewing this game because I had crappy tiles and I basically gave up as I started fishing and tried to play some specific words (SLOJD or SVARAJ). Not much to say about this one. I challenged one play, WORSTED, and lost. Didn’t know that was a word.
**********
That was a tough set of games. I had a chance against John D, but no real chance in my other two matches. Oh well. The good thing is that I’m starting to see some of the words that I’ve been studying. The bad thing is that the words don’t come “naturally/automatically” just yet. I’m working on my J5s and J6s right now. I’m hoping to finish off the J7s and J8s next week before moving on to the Q5–8s.
Recap: Oshawa Scrabble Tournament March 2007 March 5, 2007
Posted by Hans in Tournament Results.1 comment so far
The 13th annual Oshawa Scrabble Tournament is now over. Overall, I think I did reasonably well. Sure, I could have done better, but that can be said for pretty much anything. I finished in third place with a record of 8 wins and 4 losses (+279). I’m not sure what my new NSA rating is, but I think I may still be in the 700s.
The schedule for the tournament was as follows:
- Day 1: Games 1–3 in the morning; games 4–7 in the afternoon
- Day 2: Games 8–10 in the morning; games 11–12 in the afternoon (“king of the hill” format)
I’m going to post some quick recaps of the games I played, focusing mostly on interesting plays and made/missed bingos. Quackle has a new feature that generates full HTML reports of the games with a listing of possible options.
** Please note that for the games listed below, I only have access to my tile racks – my opponents’s racks remain mysteries. Also, some of my reported scores may be slightly off of the scores generated by Quackle – I’m pretty sure this is due to human error when calculating scores during a game. The reported scores are the “official” ones used in the tournament. Also, I don’t know how to indicate unsuccesful challenges (i.e., someone challenges a good word). In these instances, I have used a PASS. Time penalties are not reflected in the Quackle simulations.
After the recaps, I’ll share some thoughts about my play.
GAME RECAPS
Game #1 vs. Audrey D (view full game)
There’s not much to say about this game. Basically, I had way too many vowels this game. None of my racks made any bingos, and I had no bingo opportunities available to me (Quackle confirms it). You can see some of the ugly racks that I had. Basically, I was trying to open up the board so that if/when I got some decent racks, I could score. Just didn’t happen. The thing that kills me is that Audrey started the game off my saying that she just comes to “let other people win” at tournaments – ouch. What a way to start off the tournament.
FINAL SCORE: 358 – 310 (LOSS)
RECORD: 0 – 1
Game #2 vs. Carolyn B (view full game)
This game was interesting. Carolyn was a first time tournament player, so I wasn’t sure what to expect. She told me that she’s only played at pubs and online for a few years. As you can see, I missed an opening bingo on my first turn – I didn’t even see them. The natural bingos for the rack of ADNSTY? are: DYNASTY, STANDBY, and DYNASTS. I missed the 8 letter bingos of: DYSTONIA, DYNASTIC, and TARDYONS. I had only one other bingo opportunity, and I played MASTERs (one of 33 possible bingos) on turn #2. In retrospect, I could have played better this game as I seem to have left quite a few points on the board.
FINAL SCORE: 385 – 344 (WIN)
RECORD: 1 – 1
Game #3 vs. Gavin T (view full game)
I started the game with ADENOY?. I felt like there was a bingo in there and I ultimately found ANNOYED (ANODYNE and NOYADES being the anagrams). Gavin seemed a bit discouraged with my opening play. On turn #2, I had AEIQRTU. I missed QUAI(N)TER, A(N)TIQUE, and TAQUERIA (using an A on the board). Honestly, I didn’t even think to try and find an 8 letter word as I was fixated on using up the Q to score. Gavin made a great play of OVERsEA on his second turn. I wasn’t sure if the word was good. My only concern was if the word was hyphenated. I wrote out the word OVERSEA and OVER-SEA – just doesn’t look right with the hyphen and I let it go. I played off P(O)RCH to use up some vowels. Afterwards, Gavin said that he wanted me to challenge the word so that he could use the TWS left open by his O.
On my next turn (#4), I had AAMPRTS. The tiles didn’t look too promising so I started to shuffle them and then I saw PASTRAM(I). I apparently missed RAMPA(R)TS. At the end of turn 4, the score was 245 – 101 for me. Turn #5 was interesting. I didn’t have much, so I played GRANT. Gavin then said “Is that the best you can do? C’mon you can do better than that” in a very sarcastic way of my 12 points. I couldn’t help buy chuckle because I was averaging about 60 points per turn so far. He then played SAINTED, hooking GRANT. Apparently, I blocked his play of (H)ANDIEST with my previous play. By this time, I had a roughly 100 point lead and the rest of the game was pretty dull. We both traded points and I started to shut the board down slowly, limiting his chances of making a come-back.
FINAL SCORE: 431 – 344 (WIN)
RECORD: 2 – 1
Game #4 vs. Laurinda L (view full game)
I’m not sure what to write about this game. Normally at the club, I beat Laurinda handily (even though she beat me the last time we played). In any case, I knew that she misspells and plays phoney words so I wasn’t going to be shy about challenging her plays. But, the story of this game was not her play. In all fairness, she played a very solid game, taking the opportunities that I left her (as can be seen by the play). I challenged her bingo of EMENDING and lost. She then played some weird words that I held her on: GRAVID, URATE, ORIEL, SEGO, and BANCO. Because I was losing and could take advantage of her play, I let TOEAE go. I probably shouldn’t have. Note: when she played SEGO for 25 points, I had to challenge her to give myself a chance at prolonging the game.
Enough about her play. Basically, I lost this game. Reviewing this game on Quackle was painful as I missed bingo opportunities on five straight plays!
- Turn #4 (after the unsuccesful challenge): DEIILNS for SIDELIN(G) AT 15H
- Turn #5: ADEIPVS for SPAVI(N)ED at J2 (I didn’t know this word)
- Turn #6: EHOPSU? for at least 10 possible bingos. I missed the obvious POUCHES (PHOEBUS, UPHROES). The others were 8 letter bingos that I missed (most were ones I didn’t know), but a few I probably could have found: SUPE(R)HOT, HOMESPU(N), and PUSHOVE(R). The less obvious ones were like EUPH(R)OES and T(A)PHOUSE.
- Turn #7: FINRSU? – I was thinking FURNISH or SURFING but couldn’t find a spot. There were at least 10 bingo opportunities that I missed: FUNF(A)IRS, RUFFI(A)NS, INFUSER, SURFIN(G)S, FURRIN(G)S, and REFUSIN(G) to name just a few.
- Turn #8: CINRSY? – the 7 letter word is SCRYING, but I needed to play the 8 letter word CYPRI(A)NS which I didn’t know.
- Turn #9: CIINST? – I finally seized an opportunity and played STICkIN(G).
You want to know the worst part? On turn #13, the score was 392 – 311 (Laurinda was leading). I had EIMNSST on my rack. On a previous turn, I played T(I)LLER hoping to play a front hook later in the game. By this point, I wasn’t really thinking straight as I was a) suprised at how well Laurinda was playing, b) how crappy I was playing, and c) what crappy tiles I had the three previous turns following my bingo (HLNRTWY, ELLNRTT, DDNOSTZ). Anyway, I could have won this game if I played MISSENT (bingo for 88 points and whatever remaining tiles Laurinda had). I thought about MISSENT but wasn’t sure that it was a word and didn’t play it. Even after all that crappy play by me, I could have won the game, but I missed it! That hurts.
FINAL SCORE: 423 – 350 (LOSS)
RECORD: 2 -2
Game #5 vs. Bruce M (view full game)
After losing to Laurinda, I wasn’t feeling too confident. He opened with TRANQ for 48 points and I had IJMSSUX. I wasn’t really thinking straight and so I played JUT instead of something like JUS or JISM (hooking TRANQ). Of note, I was able to play one of the low-prob words that Kevin sent me: SKIEY (hooking TRANQ). That play drew a challenge (heh heh). On my next play, I played a bingo jIGGLES. Knowing that my opponent was going to be a bit gun-shy, I played VROW/SIDER. I wasn’t completely sure about SIDER, but I figured Bruce would let it pass because I was opening up a big lead.
Reviewing the game on Quackle, I realize that I made some dumb plays and missed four straight bingo opportunities (much like the previous game against Laurinda).
- Turn #6: CEIIMO? – I played COI(L) and missed DOMICI(L)E
- Turn #7: DEEFIM? – I played FEM and missed MISFEED (how did I miss this one?)
- Turn #8: DEEIIN? – I missed INDI(G)ENE. I don’t think I know this word.
- Turn #9: ADEEIR? – I missed AERIFIED (this one would be tough to spot)
The rest of the game was pretty tight, but I got a lucky break with my play of ZEAl for 66 points that pretty much ended the game. Bruce played a very solid game. The score would have been closer, but he went 2 minutes over the limit for 20 points.
FINAL SCORE: 360 – 296 (WIN)
RECORD: 3 – 2
Game #6 vs. Maggie P (view full game)
I was a bit nervous to play Maggie because she was winning by huge margins – I think she was 3 – 2 +560 at the time. I played the only bingo of the game on turn 11 pEOPLES. The game was pretty slow and tense as neither of us wanted to lose. I did, however, miss a few bingo opportunities (big surprise
- Turn #1: EKNNOR? the 7 letter word EINKORN or the 8 letter KEN(O)TRON. No chance of finding those as I didn’t even know those were words.
- Turn #7: DEOUV?? – I missed the obvious OVERDUE, DEVIOUS, and DEVOURS (in total there are 12 bingos here).
- Turn #8: DELOR?? – there are 90 7 letter bingos. I missed (Y)ODELLER for over 100 pts.
- Turn #13: AIMNNOR – I missed IRONMAN
- Turn #10: AELPQ?? – I was thinking PLAQUES but couldn’t find a place for it. There was no bingo available on this turn.
On my second last turn, I had AEEILNU and I was winning 334 – 310. I knew she had some good tiles (DDEINST for DISTEND or some other words). I made a good find of ULNAE for 17 points and didn’t open up anything easy for her. Afterwards, Maggie mentioned how ULNAE was a great find because she couldn’t do anything with it while I scored points and played off tiles.
FINAL SCORE: 365 – 348 (WIN)
RECORD: 4 – 2
Game #7 vs. Jim C (view full game)
The final game of day 1. I was getting a bit tired but wanted to finish on a high. At first I was a bit worried because I was getting crappy tiles and Jim was playing ZA for 65 points and REBINDS for 72 points. I started to open up the board a bit and was able to play bEATIN(G)S to make the score 193 – 176, but he responded with QI for 64 points (ouch!). I then made five high-scoring turns in a row (averaging over 30 points) while he was stuck making 10 point plays. That was pretty much the game.
I missed a bingo with EEINNS? (there are 10 words here), but the plays would be: MENINGES, ENLIVENS, NERVINES, INNERVES, to name a few (there were a few others).
FINAL SCORE: 430 – 375 (WIN)
RECORD: 5 – 2
Game #8 vs. Percy F (view full game)
I was hoping to start day two strong. Basically, I had all of the good tiles this game. I even got away with a phony bingo: IOLATes. I wanted to play something that wouldn’t open up scoring opportunities for Percy to catch-up. Apparently, I missed LAUWINE (which I don’t know). Even though I had all the good tiles, I wasn’t really able to score with them, making the game much closer than it should have been.
FINAL SCORE: 350 – 323
RECORD: 6 – 2
Game #9 vs. Christine W (view full game)
I wanted to beat Christine because of a past “incident” we had during a tournament in Stratford. I don’t think she remembered me, so I tried to be polite to her. Early on, she played OREAD and I was wondering about her word knowledge. She then played IDEMS for 44 points. I thought about it, but let it go (it’s a phony). I wasn’t sure if it was one of those rare words that is acceptable in Scrabble.
I played sEARING for 84 points and MIDDLEs for 68 points – both times opening up the board and jumping ahead. I missed bingos when I had DDEIUV? (DIVULGED or REDUVIID – WTF is that?) and CGHINOS (COSHING – didn’t know that word). I had good tiles and made use of them.
FINAL SCORE: 414 – 313
RECORD: 7 – 2
Game #10 vs. Henry D (view full game)
This was another interesting game with plenty of ramifications. This game was the last game before lunch and before the “king of the hill” games began. Henry had a record of 6 – 3.
This game was close for much of the game, even though Henry had better tiles. I played my only bingo AROUSER. He challenged the play and lost. On my next play, I debated playing in one of two spots. Of course, I took the “other” spot, allowing for Henry to play JEW for 42 points.
I made 3 mistakes this game:
- On turn #11, I played 2H HEN for 25 points. This play allowed Henry to play QaTS for 73 points! That was just dumb of me.
- On turn #13, I thought IVAR was good – and so I played EMIT/IVAR. This play was challenged off. I mistook IVAR for IZAR.
- Turn #17 – my last play. I was down by 30 points (336 – 306) and I had MUGS left. A few turns ago, I had DEGMOSU – basically SMUDGE + O with no more tiles left in the bag. I played the O hoping to go out with SMUDGE, but Henry blocked my out play. I played of ED for 30 points to get to 336 – 306. On my final play, I missed 2L MUGS for 40 points and the win! Ouch. I was looking at 14D MUGS but that didn’t give me enough points. I was running out of time, so I played SUM even though it wasn’t enough, hoping that Henry wouldn’t go out.
I could have/should have won this game! Even after Henry tried to shut the board down, I still should have won this game. This game further highlights some of the weaknesses of my game – missing hook and overlapping plays.
FINAL SCORE: 345 – 332 (LOSS)
RECORD: 7 – 3
LUNCH BREAK
Going into the lunch break, five players had a record of 7 – 3 and I was in second because of spread points. Henry was in 1st, Gavin was in 3rd, and Laurinda and Percy were in 4th and 5th and Maggie was in 6th at 6 – 4. Basically, as long as I kept winning, I had this tournament.
Game #11 vs. Henry D (view full game)
In a weird twist of fate, I got to play Henry again. He wasn’t too happy about that, saying that he was lucky to win the last game. At the time, I didn’t really think so because I thought he played a pretty good game. Looking back, I guess he was lucky.
Anyway, I was scared because he opened with ZEROS for 48 points. I managed to make some decent scoring plays the rest of the game. I made two bingos: StONERS and DIeTING (this was the only bingo play on the board). I had decent tiles and made use of them. I even got away with a phoney (FOILER).
In our previous game, I learned that Henry was playing “scared” and was fairly defensive about the TWS spots. Knowing this, I tried to use it to my advantage. I would make plays that would start to open up the board, knowing that he’d try and use up the TWS spots. What I tried to do, however, was to limit his scoring opportunities to making 3–4 letter words while giving me some alternative places to score. In this game, every time I started to open things up, he get this look and then he’d make plays to close things down (he confirmed it on turn #9 with ALT – he played a phony that I didn’t catch). Then he repeated himself on turn #11 when he was afraid of a “hanging” D. He fidgeted for a minute or two and then ended up playing (D)OOR. Personally, I was hoping he’d play something like (ODD)ER so I could try for a TWS because I was getting some good tiles at the time. Anyway, I played DIETING and that pretty much ended the game.
I did miss one other bingo opportunity. I had EOOPSTV and there was a free R on the board. I played VOTE(R), but I didn’t realize I had STOPOVER available to me. After the game was over, Henry mentioned that we had equally good tiles, but that I really made good use of them.
FINAL SCORE: 415 – 319 (WIN)
RECORD: 8 – 3
Game #12 vs. Laurinda L (view full game)
The final game. I wanted to beat Laurinda because I had lost to her previously. The short story of this game was that I didn’t play very well. For some reason, Laurinda seems to have my number recently (she’s won three games in a row now – two at the tournament and once at the club). I think her comment of “Please don’t be so serious. Let’s just have fun” and here talking during the game bother me more than I want to admit. I really should call her on that.
Anyway, I missed a bingo opportunity on turn #2. I had BGHINN? with an open E on the board. I didn’t even think about BENCHING. I was able to find a very good bingo on turn #5. I had CEENNT?. The only play available to me was CENTNER. That drew a hold. A person sitting next to Laurinda must have made a puzzled look because I remember hearing Laurinda say “I’m not going to challenge him because he plays weird bingos”. I really wanted her to challenge me. After that, I basically got Is, Os, and consonants (see the game).
I couldn’t make up the ground and I started to panic. As a result, I didn’t make good plays. I was upset that she was burning blanks and Ses with words like BUt and SAGA. Apparently, she had all four Ses at one point of the game. Anyway, I have to give her credit because she plays her game and for whatever reason, makes me play poorly. Congratulations to her. I must say that she plays some weird words (TAXON). Combined with her spelling mistakes (RUR, TWOONIES – from a previous game, and TOEAE) makes it hard for me to determine if she knows some rare words or is just making crap up. I’ll probably have to play her again, so I better figure out how to get back to my game. Just goes to show that you can’t beat bad tiles.
FINAL SCORE: 400 – 335 (LOSS)
RECORD: 8 – 4
FINAL RESULT
Because of my loss to Laurinda, I tied with Maggie at 8 – 4. Maggie ended up crushing Percy by over 150 points and thus got the point-spread/margin tie-breaker to finish in 2nd place ($150). I came in third. Laurinda finished at 9 – 3 (1st place) and won the $200 prize.
POST-TOURNAMENT THOUGHTS
Now that the tournament is over, I noticed a few things about my play.
- My word knowledge of 4–6 letter words needs improvement, especially when using the “power tiles” (i.e., Q, Z, X, J, K, W)
- I need to spend more time looking for better plays rather than taking an easy play
- I need to learn to control my emotions better. I’ve noticed that I get frustrated when opponents start shutting the board down right from the beginning or start to play the “step-ladder” game. That really irks me and then I start to try and open up the board. But the result is that I leave juicy openings for my opponent to use and score big-time points (see game #10 vs. Henry D)
- I have difficulty finding 7 and 8 letter bingos. For some unknown reason, I tend to “give-up” on racks instead of constantly looking for a bingo. Hopefully as I study more, things will improve.
- The players that I compete against right now (NSA rating: 500–1000) tend to play very conservatively or defensively. I noticed in a few of my games that players seem to want to use the TWS and sacrifice their tiles. Maybe I can take advantage of this information in the future (see games #10 and #11 against Henry D).
- Finally, I need to focus less on either “winning”, my tournament record, or my NSA rating and concentrate on making the best possible plays that I can. Sometimes you just get crappy tiles, get bad luck, or play the best that you can but still lose. If I start to make good, high quality plays on a consistent basis, the winning should take care of itself. Right now, I think I’m too focused on trying to win and raise my NSA score that I don’t play as best as I can.

Upcoming: Oshawa Scrabble Tournament March 2, 2007
Posted by Hans in Uncategorized.add a comment
This weekend is the Oshawa Scrabble Tournament. I’m hoping to have a successful weekend of playing Scrabble as I’ve been studying for the past few weeks. I wasn’t able to attend the club tonight because of a snow storm (we had about 20cm of snow today) so I spent some time reviewing word lists.
At the time of this writing, I’m currently listed as seed #7 in division #5. Cross-tables.com currently lists 18 players in my division, of which five are unrated. I’ve got a pre-tournament 6.8 expected wins – meaning that I need to win most of my games to move up.
Anyway, here’s a short list of things I’ve been studying:
- Hi-probability 6 letter stems: TISANE, SATIRE, SENIOR, and RETINA. RETINA? I just learned this week, so I’m not 100% on it just yet. After this weekend, I hope to add a few more stems: ARSINE, INSERT, TONIES, ASTERN, STONER, and SEATER to start.
- U & I dumps: I started learning a short list of U and I dumps because I seem to have trouble knowing what to do with these two letters. I didn’t get around to learning more general vowel dumps but hope to do so for up-coming tournaments.
- 3 letter words: I’ve been reviewing my 3 letter words as I think I’ve forgotten quite a few of them. I can’t say that I have them all, but going over this list was useful.
- Miscellaneous “weird/rare” words: I’ve been going over a list of words that are somewhat weird/rare. I’m hoping to bust out a few this weekend and have people challenge me (VROUW, TUYER, JNANA, or ZEBEC are a few examples).
I hope to write a summary of my games and overall thoughts after the tournament is over. Hopefully this will be a good one. My goal for this tournament is to play as best as I can, ideally winning 10 games (or more). I hope that I can raise my rating close to 900 or so as I’d like to break the 1000 barrier this year. Hopefully a string of a few good tournaments will help me get there.
